Urban contemporary) and
urban radio are synonymous with the contemporary musical genres
hip hop and R&B, and the associate hip hop culture which originated in
New York City and is popular in urban areas (in these contexts the term "
black music" has sometimes been used, and
urban serves as a race-neutral replacement).
